Effect of gas purity on laser cutting results

Auxiliary gas plays a vital role in the working process of the laser cutting machine, in which the purity and pressure of the gas are two crucial parameters. Do you know how these two parameters affect the effect of laser cutting? Today, Chuangheng will introduce to you the impact of gas purity.

Gas purity directly affects the quality and efficiency of cutting in laser cutting. High-purity gas can effectively prevent impurities from interfering with the cutting process, ensuring cutting quality and process stability.

1. Cutting quality

Nitrogen purity: Nitrogen is a commonly used protective gas when cutting stainless steel, aluminum alloy and other materials. High-purity nitrogen (>99.99%) can effectively prevent oxidation and make the cuts smooth and free of oxide layers. On the contrary, lower purity nitrogen may contain trace amounts of oxygen and moisture, which can cause a slight oxidation reaction during the cutting process, affecting the color and finish of the cut.

Argon gas purity: Argon gas is usually used to cut materials that are sensitive to oxidation such as titanium, zirconium, etc. High-purity argon (>99.995%) can completely prevent oxidation reactions and keep the edges of the incision smooth and clean. Low-purity argon may cause oxidation spots on the surface of the material, affecting cut quality.

2. Cutting speed

High purity gas helps increase cutting speed. Impurities in the gas may absorb or scatter the energy of the laser beam, reducing the efficiency of laser delivery and thereby slowing down the cutting speed. Using high-purity gas can ensure that the laser energy is concentrated in the cutting area, reducing unnecessary energy loss and improving cutting efficiency.

3. Stability

Using high-purity gases can provide a more stable cutting process and reduce unexpected problems caused by impurities. For example, impurities in the gas may cause nozzle clogging or uneven gas flow, affecting the uniformity and quality of the cut. High-purity gas avoids these problems, making the cutting process more controllable and stable.
